The formation of Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauāuru was a response to the aspirations of members of our community in Whaitara who in June 2002 wanted to create an opportunity to support the notion of generating positivity with Kapahaka being the vessel. This aligned with the passion to strengthen the local language and customs in our community has been the driving force behind the establishment of our rōpū. Like most kapahaka we are committed to the responsibility of intergenerational transmission within our kāinga and community. And so at the core of our kaupapa is the importance of supporting Taranaki Reo, Taranaki Tikanga and Aronga Taranaki.
