Aotea Ūtanganui come under the umbrella of the Pātea Māori Cultural Theatre Trust along with two other groups, Taikura (kaumātua) and the Pātea Māori Club. Last year Aotea Ūtanganui celebrated its 50-year anniversary. The group was established in 1967 by the late Napi Waaka and kaumātua of Pariroa Pā. Since then there have been a few name changes, however the philosophy remains the same, ‘to nurture and develop our culture and people’ through Māori performing arts. Current members hail mainly from all Taranaki iwi, however the group continues to be based, as it has for the last half century, at Pariroa Pā, Pātea. The group last performed at Te Matatini in 2005.
